The Income Trap [Why you NEED to know what you're optimising for]

Over the past 3 years of building my business online, I’ve spent most of it optimising for money.

After all, that’s the whole point of a business, isn’t it? 

But in the last 12 months, I’ve started optimising for freedom and options, not money.

Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t mean I’m not trying to make money or make more money.

It means that I’m optimising to have the freedom to choose how I spend every second of my day.

In the past 12 months, I’ve felt my best, performed my best, and gotten my best results yet.

 

The Income Trap

 

You see there’s one major problem with optimising for money.

The world is constantly bombarding you with new, fancy, “fool-proof” online business models.

Shiny object syndrome is rampant.

When I optimised for money, I would hop on a venture that would earn me a bit more money but gave me a tonne more responsibilities and way less freedom.

I see people do this all the time.

You start making money online. You’ve got addicted to the dopamine from selling a digital product, a book, merchandise, or closing a sales call for their agency, coaching, or service business.

You are able to live comfortably. Travel, treat yourself to nice things, and not worry about the bills.

But you want more - again, nothing wrong with this, I’m all for earning as much money as possible.

But to get more money most people will end up sacrificing time and energy freedom.

And cool, they might end up making more money, they might not.

The main problem is that they end up feeling lost, unfulfilled, and as if something is wrong.

They just can’t figure out what.

But because they’ve deviated from what they’re building a business for (to live life on their terms) they’re out of alignment.

It’s ruining their performance and infiltrating their mindset.

Their subconscious is eating them up.

It’s easy to scale for the sake of scaling, for the sake of income.

But if you end up going down a route of taking on more responsibilities than you WANT, you sacrifice time and energy freedom for income.

Now, if you want more and more responsibility and to scale your business that way - do it.

I’m trying to make you aware of what you really want so that you can scale your business and life in the right direction.

You need to ensure you’re making money how you want to make it.

You need to ensure you’re not trapping yourself into ventures and responsibilities that stop you from living the life you want to live.

I’m also not trying to say to work 2 hours/day.

I don’t.

Most days I work more. 

Why?

Because I want to. Because I enjoy what I’m working on and building.

But I am saying to have the option to work 2 hours a day if you want to.

I’m writing this email from Berlin.

I’ll write this email, do a few other tasks, and my work day will be over in 2-3 hours.

I have the option and freedom to work 2 hours a day.

 

What Are You Optimising For?

 

Whether you want more money or more freedom - optimise for what you want.

It’s the only way to ensure you’re fulfilled and willing to give your all to whatever you’re building.

Keep in mind that what you’re optimising for can change over time.

As humans, we aren’t stuck.

We’re constantly changing.

Just because you want freedom now doesn’t mean you won’t want to optimise for money in 10 years and vice versa.

Take every action and make every decision in relation to your business with what you want to optimise for.

You’ll perform better, feel better, and build something impactful.

 

How To Know What You Want: 

 

Don’t know what to optimise for? Follow these steps:

 

Life Tapping + Conscious Alignment

 

This involves you crafting a vision for your dream life, identity and goals.

You then keep those visions in mind and consciously align every area of your life with those visions.

With every decision you make and action you take, ask yourself if that decision/action is aligned with your dream life, identity and goals.

If it’s not, don’t do it.

Chase Self-Mastery

 

To optimise there’s a certain level of mastery of your mind, actions, and craft you must achieve.

It’s the only way to get good enough results that will allow you to optimise for the lifestyle you want to live.

Keep in mind it may require front-loaded effort or periods of excessive effort above what your ideal life is to allow you to get your ideal life.

Regularly Check In

 

It’s super easy to get out of alignment.

And over time shift your decisions and actions more and more toward optimising for something you DON’T want to optimise for.

You need to regularly check in with your lifestyle and business to ensure you’re optimising for what you want.

 

Choose The Right Vehicle

 

Not every business model will allow you to optimise for what you want to optimise for.

If you’re trying to build a brick-and-mortar store it’s going to be harder to optimise for freedom.

If you’re going to try to be a freelancer it’s going to be harder to optimise for money.

Different business models have different purposes.

Make sure you choose the business model that allows you to optimise for what you want to optimise for.

I highly recommend audience building + education business.

You build an audience (traffic) and you sell a course or coaching that helps them achieve x goal or solve y pain point.

It allows you to scale in traffic, genuinely help people and be more or less hands-on depending on your goals (by selling a course vs coaching etc)
