A Foolproof Guide To Longterm Consistency

We’ve all seen the compounding curve of consistency - made popular by the 1% improvement model from Atomic Habits by James Clear (if you haven’t, see below)
This idea is that by performing a specific action - whether in the gym, your work, or basically any area of life - for a long enough period of time, the result of repeating that action will compound due to your increased level of skill and competency in performing that action and the combination of all the tiny results from each time you performed that action previously
Creating the “overnight success” appearance.
But, to be able to benefit from this compounding phenomenon (for both your skills and results) you need to be a consistent motherf*cker.
And not just consistent for a week or a month, but an extended period of time (2+ years for most people, but it really depends on your craft and goals)
Well, 4 years ago I couldn’t be consistent if my life depended on it.
I would try x and give up after a week.
I would promise to myself that I would get up every morning at 6AM. I’d get the first morning, but every other morning that bed swallowed me up and I would turn off my alarm while half asleep.
I couldn’t be consistent in anything except the gym.
But for the past 3 years, my consistency has been my no.1 advantage.
For example, I’ve been on Twitter for about 3 years, I’ve tweeted multiple times a day, every single day for those past years.
I haven’t missed a single damn day.
A single damn day. Not once.
I’ve been damn consistent - hence, I can reap the benefits of improving my skill of writing, content creation, and social media growth across not only Twitter but Instagram and LinkedIn as well.
I’ve been posting on Instagram for around 1 year and a few months and I’ve grown to over 293 000 followers.
And that’s not to mention my consistency in business. From lead gen, to client fulfillment to iteration and learning. In the past 3 years I’ve built my income from $0 / month as a broke university student to multi 6 figures.
This sort of exponential growth seems crazy, it seems impossible for most.
But the only reason I was able to do any of this, was because of the compounding effects from being consistent.
So basically, if you haven’t gotten the picture yet, you need to be consistent.
Regardless of what you want to do, who you are, what you’ve done - if you’re not consistent, you will not make substantial progress and succeed.
So how can you build your consistency?
1. Figure out the daily actions for your goals
Yes, I talk about this ALL THE MOTHERF*CKING TIME, but for good reason.
If something is worth saying once, it’s worth repeating 1000 times.
So when I say to figure out the daily actions for your goals - I mean it.
Think about it, you’re told to aim big (and you should) but when you set a big goal you end up fixating on that goal, you end up overwhelmed and have no clue how to get there - and you can’t be consistent.
Unless you build daily actions for your goals.
This way you’ve something to focus on each day that isn’t overwhelming, that you can be consistent in doing, and most importantly, that done over time will allow you to achieve your big goal.
How to figure out your daily actions?
-
Set your big goal
-
What do you need to do achieve that goal?
-
Break what you need to do into a smaller time component
-
Continue breaking each step down until you have a daily action
EG.
Set your big goal:
-
Build a 10k / month business from my brand by June 2023
What do you need to do achieve that goal?
-
Sign 5 2k / month clients by June 2023
-
Outreach to 2000 people by June 2023
Break what you need to do into a smaller time component
-
Outreach to 400 people / month
Continue breaking each step down until you have a daily action
-
Outreach to 100 people / week
-
Outreach to 15 people / day
PS: I just made this plan to build a 10k / month business right off the top of my head, don’t follow it. There’s much better ways to build a 10k / month business from your brand.
2. Understand and embrace "why"
You are going to face resistance.
Your inner b*tch will scream at you some days and talk to you on others.
It’ll whisper sweet little nothings into your ear “you can do it tomorrow” “you deserve to take the day off”
Don’t listen to it. Don’t let the inner bitch win.
Get out a notepad, and a pen and start writing motherfucker.
Go deep, be introspective, and start to understand 2 things:
-
Why you want to achieve your big goal
-
Why your daily actions are important to achieving that big goal
This way when your inner bitch comes running, you can tell it where to go. You have shit to do and you know why it’s important.
3. Develop internal accountability
Stop focusing on external accountability.
External accountability forces you to outsource your accountability (and therefore whether you get sh*t done, make progress and get results) to other people.
It forces you to give up control.
Now, can external accountability be good - yes, of course. Nothing is black and white, everything lives in a grey area.
However, in the long run, external accountability isn’t a good idea. You can’t rely on others forever. You need to build up your own internal accountability.
How? Well you’ll need to get that notebook and pen out again
-
Journal to understand your core values. What are they? Why are they important to you?
-
Separate your actions from your emotions. Not you from your emotions. Your actions.
4. Focus on habits, routines and systems
Now, even when you do all of the above, consistency is going to be hard - especially over a number of years.
And yes, you should embrace the hard sh*t. It’s what gets results.
But there’s no need to make everything harder than it needs to be.
Streamline your journey and the act of doing the hard shit with habits, routines, and systems.
What habits to build? Build your daily actions into habits.
What routines to build? Build a morning, deep work, and evening routine
What systems to build? Systemise everything that can be systemised.
5. Work on achieving Self-Mastery.
Want to be consistent? You need to be able to control your thoughts and actions.
You need to be able to do what you need to do, when you need to do it, regardless of if you want to or not - because there will be days you don’t want to do it.
Consistency requires you to master your mind.
So chase Self-Mastery motherf*cker.
-
Rewire your mindset for success (stoic, abundance and extreme ownership mindsets)
-
Master productivity (get more done in less time and make it easier to be consistent)
-
Control and audit your environment
-
Use your biology as a tool to boost your energy, focus and discipline
-
Build and utilise momentum
Now go be consistent mofo.
